## Why Learn English at Home?
Learning English at home has many advantages over learning English in a classroom or a language school. Some of these advantages are:
- You can learn at your own pace and schedule. You don't have to worry about missing classes, being late, or having conflicts with other commitments. You can also choose the time of day that suits you best, whether it's early morning, late night, or anytime in between.
- You can save money and time. You don't have to pay for tuition fees, transportation costs, or materials. You also don't have to waste time commuting or waiting for your teacher or classmates. You can use that time to study more or do other things that you enjoy.
- You can customize your learning experience. You can choose the topics, skills, and levels that interest you and match your needs. You can also use the resources and tools that work best for you, whether it's books, podcasts, videos, apps, or websites. You can also mix and match different methods and styles of learning, such as reading, listening, speaking, writing, grammar, vocabulary, etc.
- You can have more fun and motivation. You can learn English through things that you love, such as music, movies, games, hobbies, or culture. You can also set your own goals and rewards and celebrate your achievements. You can also connect with other learners online and share your experiences and tips.
## How I Learned English at Home in 30 Days
Now that you know why learning English at home is a great idea, let me tell you how I did it in 30 days. Here is the step-by-step guide that I followed:
### Step 1: Set Your Goal
The first step is to set a clear and realistic goal for yourself. Your goal should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). For example, my goal was:
- To improve my speaking and listening skills by one level (from B1 to B2) in 30 days.
- To be able to have a fluent conversation with a native speaker on various topics for at least 15 minutes.
- To be able to understand the main ideas and details of a podcast or a video on topics that interest me.
Your goal may be different from mine depending on your current level, skills, interests, and needs. The important thing is to make sure that your goal is challenging but attainable and that it aligns with your purpose and motivation for learning English.
### Step 2: Make a Plan
The second step is to make a plan that will help you achieve your goal. Your plan should include:
- The resources and tools that you will use
- The activities and tasks that you will do
- The time and frequency that you will dedicate
- The way that you will track and measure your progress
- The feedback and support that you will seek
For example, my plan was:
- To use online courses from Coursera and Udemy as my main resources
- To do one lesson per day from each course (about 30 minutes each)
- To practice speaking and listening with native speakers on Italki twice a week (about 30 minutes each)
- To watch one TED talk or YouTube video per day on topics that interest me (about 15 minutes each)
- To listen to one podcast episode per day on topics that interest me (about 15 minutes each)
- To review my notes and vocabulary every day (about 15 minutes each)
- To take a placement test before and after the 30 days to assess my level
- To record myself speaking every week and compare my performance
- To ask for feedback from my teachers and partners on Italki
- To join online communities and forums for English learners
Your plan may be different from mine depending on the resources and tools that you prefer, the activities and tasks that you enjoy, the time and frequency that you can afford, the way that you learn best, and the feedback and support that you need.
### Step 3: Take Action
The third step is to take action and execute your plan. This is the most important and challenging step, as it requires discipline, consistency, and perseverance. Here are some tips that helped me stay on track and motivated:
- Schedule your learning sessions in advance and stick to them. Treat them as appointments that you can't miss or reschedule. Use a calendar or a planner to organize your time and tasks.
- Create a learning environment that is conducive and comfortable. Find a quiet and distraction-free space where you can focus and concentrate. Use headphones, speakers, or a microphone to enhance your audio quality. Have your materials and tools ready and accessible.
- Vary your learning activities and methods to avoid boredom and burnout. Try different types of resources and tools, such as books, podcasts, videos, apps, or websites. Try different styles of learning, such as reading, listening, speaking, writing, grammar, vocabulary, etc. Try different topics and genres, such as music, movies, games, hobbies, or culture.
- Review and revise your learning regularly to reinforce your memory and retention. Use flashcards, quizzes, games, or apps to test yourself and recall what you learned. Use spaced repetition and active recall techniques to optimize your learning curve and avoid forgetting.
- Reward yourself for your efforts and achievements. Celebrate your milestones and accomplishments, no matter how big or small. Treat yourself with something that you like or enjoy, such as a snack, a drink, a movie, or a game. Share your progress and success with others who support you and cheer you on.
### Step 4: Evaluate Your Results
The fourth step is to evaluate your results and see how far you have come. This is the final and satisfying step, as it shows you the outcome of your hard work and dedication. Here are some ways that I evaluated my results:
- I took a placement test after the 30 days and compared it with the one I took before. I was happy to see that I improved my level from B1 to B2 in speaking and listening skills.
- I had a fluent conversation with a native speaker on various topics for more than 15 minutes. I was able to express myself clearly and confidently and understand what he said without much difficulty.
- I understood the main ideas and details of a podcast or a video on topics that interest me. I was able to follow along without subtitles or transcripts and catch most of the words and phrases.
Your results may be different from mine depending on your goal, plan, action, and evaluation methods. The important thing is to recognize your improvement and appreciate your effort.
